In his Co-Lab talk, Michael Winnick (Dscout founder and CEO) explored a powerful shift in mindset for researchers and insights professionals: moving from a world of trade-offs (“or”) to one of possibilities (“and”).
Using the ampersand as a metaphor, Michael challenged the field to reimagine long-held binaries—quant or qual, speed or depth, innovation or integrity—and asked what might be possible if we embraced both. In a moment defined by uncertainty and rapid change (particularly with AI), Michael made a compelling case for optimism, versatility, and action.
He urged the community to stop analyzing from the sidelines and instead jump into the work—curious, collaborative, and confident.
He also reflected candidly on the emotional state of today’s leaders: they’re not just driving change—they’re reacting to it, often with fear. Michael encouraged the audience to recognize that fear not as a weakness, but as an opportunity. By stepping into ambiguity and offering clarity, direction, and experimentation, researchers can lead transformation—not just track it.
His call to action was clear: embrace the moment, support one another, and help shape a better future by living the ampersand.
